I love waking up to an early-spring day in my college dorm. Outside my window, I can barely see anything except branches with their neon green blooms and the hazy shapes of the hilltops in the distance. I can tell the sun will come out later, and it will be warmer then, too. For now, I will put on my folk playlist and watch the mist shift in the early morning.
I feel lucky to have a view like this, let alone a peaceful morning as I wake up.
As spring appears around me, I bask in the cherry blossoms outside of my dorm, their petals heavy in the thickening breeze, and, later, white petals streaming down from their former branches on my walk to breakfast. Although a misty morning shields much of the larger beauty of spring, when I’m up close to a particularly beautiful, looming tree, I pay more attention to it than usual. I feel as though the rest of the world has been muted, and it is only this tree with its gnarled limbs and twirled branches and me.
I’ve always been one of those people whose mood is slightly affected by the weather. But I don’t really have a least favorite kind of weather, aside from a cold, icy day in February. I adapt to my surroundings, bundling up, layering, or dressing down. My favorite season is Autumn, mainly because of the delicious foods in season and the beauty of the changing colors.
But there’s nothing quite like Spring.
I’ve always considered it the briefest season—and the loveliest. It’s too cold for most things, too rainy most days, but when everything is back in bloom, I find that I look at nature as if I were a kid again. Everything’s more colorful and pronounced.
While the leaves are still returning to the trees in my corner of the world, a misty morning builds up anticipation that a bright, verdant day is coming soon, as is the end of my college semester. And then, it’s Summer.
Blame it on Mercury being in Retrograde recently, but I think we forget the beauty of nature too much when we get caught up in the busyness of our lives. Despite all the bad (or the good) that is happening to us, around us, nature blooms nevertheless. It does not stop for our sorrows, speed up for our joys, but rather, keeps its own pace.
Take a moment to step out into the day and immerse yourself in nature. Take a walk, read a book, stop to look around, and breathe deeply. Remember that there are natural reminders of days of rejuvenation and springtime all around us, in the sky and among the trees. Take a moment today to pay attention to nature, spend a moment among the leaves and flowers coming back into bloom.
Thank you for reading my morning drabble, and I hope you have a lovely day, no matter the weather.
The art of just walking around and looking at things!!!
